What type of digital recorder should I use for recording live piano music?
I would like to record live music played on the grand piano. I need to know what type of equipment I need, hardware AND software. Not too expensive, less than $500.
I would like a portable system.
There are lots of options. How portable do you want it? Are you adding anything else or just piano? For starters, you could get what is called a field recorder. M-Audio makes one that's in your price range. It is a self contained unit, about the size of a paperback book. It has a sterio mic built right into the top of it, records on to smart media cards, and can export the recording as an mp3 ready to burn on to a cd. Or you could get a smaller, self contained digital recorder for the $300- 400 range, add a $100 conderser mic (Behringer B-1, Shure PG81, Studio Projects makes a few in that range, MXL, ect.) and you're in business. Other options are going computer based, which someone else covered. I'm not going in to that because I'm guessing your computer probably isn't right next to your grand piano, so it could be a little more work to get that set up. I'm keeping it more portable.
