Recommendations on a new type of saddle?
I recently sold my M. Toulouse close contact saddle and I'm in the market to purchase a new one. I'm wondering whether anyone has tried the Equipe Expression saddle or in general what your recommendations would be for a NICE quality Close Contact saddle. For reference - I do NOT want grained leather (e.g. HdR, the Wylde saddle, etc). I prefer smooth leather and have been considering a used French saddle (CWD, Antares?) but I'd really prefer to get one NEW. Does anyone have the Hampton Classic by Antares? Let it rip - but please, don't say Wintec, Beval, Pessoa or Dover. I've sat in them all - Beval places you too far forward, Pessoa is too uncomfortable and Wintec/Dover just not my style.
I personally, along with any of my students who have ridden in any of them, love the Blue Ribbon saddles. My personal is an Avanti- it is 17 years old, smooth leather, and is on about 12 horses a day everyday in that time and still looks and rides like new. It is awesome. They do not make them anymore but I have bought three new ones on eBay in the past 6 months, so they are out there. Cost will run you anywhere from $250 to $1000 depending on if it is new, what condition it is in, what style it is, etc.
It does not sit you too far forward or back, it is really a very nicely balanced saddle.
One of my clients has an Antares, but I still like my Blue Ribbon over it, I just feel more balance in it. Plus I have wider hips so the Blue Ribbon fits me much more.
Another one of my clients has the new Courbette with the waterproof leather and flex tree. It is smooth leather, sits very nicely, is waterproof (really it is) and the tree expands and contracts depending on what horse it is on. I think that she paid around $600 for a new one on eBay. She has shorter legs, medium hips, and it fits her great. I have rode in it briefly and it fits me too, but I am not a fan of knee rolls or knee padding either.
We have three bates close contacts and one jumping in our lesson program. I do not like them as they often do not fit the horses without a riser, rider's legs never go where they should, and it always seems like you are leaning way far forward to compensate for the saddle sitting down in the back even with a riser. Change out panels are nice on the two that have it, but the other two do not.
I would suggest going to a larger tack shop that has most of the brands that you are looking and contemplating between, sit in them at the store, and then ask them if you can take them on a trial. You can always try them out, see if they really fit the same on the horse, and then take them back and try another. Then, if you dont want to pay the tack store price, look on eBay for the same saddle.
